CES 2017: Acer's $9,000 Predator 21 X laptop is the exact opposite of 'thin and light'

This isn't a laptop, but a high-end gaming desktop PC that happens to fold in two.

"Thin and light" isn't compatible with a laptop that features a curved 21-inch display, dual GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs, and room for five storage drives.
Yeah, try cramming that into a MacBook chassis.
Acer used CES 2017 to unveil a crazy new gaming laptop aimed at people with deep pockets and strong backs to carry the laptop.
The Predator 21 X takes what is essentially a gaming desktop and crams it into a folding laptop-type shape. It starts with a 21-inch 2560 x 1080 resolution curved IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate.
But this is just the beginning.
Powering this monstrous display is Intel's 3.9GHz seventh-generation Intel Core i7-7820HK silicon powerhouse, dual GeForce GTX 1080 X graphics cards, four DDR4 slots that can hold a maximum of 64GB of RAM, up to four 512GB solid-state drives (two of which can be NVMe PCIe SSDs which are five times faster than SATA SSDs), and a single hard drive bay which is home to a 1TB unit.
But that's not all. There's a full-sized mechanical keyboard featuring Cherry MX Brown key switches with customizable backlight options, a numeric keypad that flips over to reveal a precision touchpad, four speakers and two subwoofers, two power supplies, five AeroBlade cooling fans, and nine heat pipes.


All this is packed into a black shell that looks like it's been hacked out of granite or marble, which brings the total weight of the package to 19.4 pounds.
All you need is a spare $8,999 and this beast can be yours. The system is built to order and available in February.

Huawei starts off the new year with the 5X successor, the Honor 6X, that brings a dual camera experience with a long battery life and sleek all-aluminum form factor to the US market.
Huawei is bringing the Honor 6X to the US with some important upgrades while keeping the price low at just $249.99.
Huawei announced the Honor 6X in China on 18 October 2016 and today made the US release announcement at CES in Las Vegas. The Honor 6X packs in a lot of smartphone at an affordable price and I've spent the last 10 days testing one out.

HARDWARE

In 2016, my favorite smartphone hardware maker was Huawei. There's something about 2.5D glass, beveled metal edges, an extremely fast rear fingerprint scanner, and solid performing camera. The Honor 8 is an incredible device that can be found for just around $300 with near-flagship specifications. The Honor 6X is a bigger phone and competes in the large display market with specs that are near flagship level.
Rather than having a rear beveled edge on the back of the Honor 6X, we see that Huawei took the sides and curved it into the back panel so the phone fits well in your hand. The dual cameras are positioned on top of each other, like the Mate 9, and also have a bump that sticks out the back. The fingerprint sensor is centered below the cameras.
The SIM/microSD card slot tray is on the left with the volume and power buttons on the right. The mono speaker and microUSB port are found on the bottom. An IR port and the 3.5mm headset jack are on top.
Specifications of the Honor 6X include:

The Honor 8 has an USB Type-C port, but the Honor 6X still has a microUSB port on the bottom for charging up the device. You will still find a 3.5mm headset jack, as well as a FM radio.
The camera performs well and may be one of the best I've ever used at this price point. I included inside, exterior, outside sunset, and wide aperture photos from the Huawei Mate 9 and Honor 6X in my image gallery below. The Honor 6X will likely satisfy most folks, especially if photos are just shared on social networks.

SOFTWARE

The Honor 6X runs Emotion UI 4.1 and Honor stated it will be upgraded to version 5.0 in the future. While some people have issues with EMUI, I find it to be a functional UI that adds to Android without being overly complicated or obtrusive.

There is no app drawer in EMUI 4.1, but you can always install something like the Google Now Launcher and be satisfied with the home screen experience. The software performs the same as the Honor 8 so check out that review if you are interested in EMUI 4.1.
One aspect of the dual camera Huawei devices like the P9, Mate 9, and Honor 8 is the advanced camera software. While the iPhone and Google Pixel devices have a very basic camera user interface, Honor brings an advanced experience similar to what we see on Samsung and LG phones. You will find wide aperture mode, professional mode, food mode, perfect selfie, beauty mode, makeup mode for the front camera, panorama, HDR, watermark, audio note, ultra snapshot, best photo, smile snapshot, audio control, timer function, touch to capture, and time-lapse mode.
Honor is a brand that targets millennials and believes that providing slick camera functions is better than a simple automatic interface. I personally enjoy using some of these modes and get more comments from people when I take unique shots using these modes.

INITIAL EXPERIENCES

I've had the Honor 6X in hand for about 10 days and if I wasn't such a flagship-loving smartphone user I could easily get by with a device like the Honor 6X. People who are looking for great value and solid specifications may want to consider the 6X. It's nice to have a smartphone that lasts a couple of days and helps you be creative with photography.
The Honor 6X has dual cameras for faster focus and wide aperture tricks. The main rear camera is a 12 megapixel shooter, but the second one is only 2 megapixels. It is not a monochrome lens like the Huawei P9 and Mate 9, but is a color one that is used to improve focus times and provide wide aperture effects.
Huawei has some fantastic hardware design language and the Honor 6X continues that trend. It definitely does not feel like a low price Android smartphone and thankfully it also performs better than you would expect for a mid-level device.
People looking for a big screen phone at a very affordable price will appreciate the Honor 6X. It will be available on Amazon, Newegg, ebay, and other online retailers with in-store available in Best Buy, Costco, and others. You will be able to purchase the Honor 6X for $249.99 in gray, gold, and silver.

Plenty of work remains on the table for Twitter's technical teams in the wake of Adam Messinger's departure.


Twitter has been making the news lately for not-so-happy reasons, such as its plummeting stock price and failure--so far--to find an acquirer. The company has also seen a series of top executives leave the company in recent months and the most significant is CTO Adam Messinger, a former Oracle development executive who logged five years at Twitter.
Messinger said in a tweet that he's leaving to "take some time off" and his departure seems amicable enough from the outside. Twitter's VP of engineering, Edward Ho, will assume Messinger's duties and report directly to CEO Jack Dorsey, according to the New York Times.
Messinger had a broader remit at Twitter than the CTO job might suggest. In January, after a previous wave of executive departures, Messinger gained oversight of engineering, consumer product, design and research, user services and Fabric, Twitter's mobile development platform.
Whether Ho is given a long-term shot at the CTO job, or is just keeping the seat warm for an outside candidate remains to be seen. In either case, Twitter's next CTO has plenty to work on in 2017.
"Consistency is my biggest technical complaint," says Constellation Research VP and principal analyst Alan Lepofsky. "I use twitter.com, tweetdeck.twitter.com and the twitter mobile apps on Android and iPad, and the features available are different on each! For example, the ability to add an image, then tag people in the image (instead of adding their names in the 140 char) is not consistent."
"I think hashtags need some type of bubble help, where people can expand them to understand what they mean and get more information," Lepofsky adds. "And clearly, the noise-to-value ratio needs work. Twitter needs to become far more personalized, understanding the content I want and the people I want to engage with."
Another plus would be improved analytics that help users better understand which of their tweets have had the most impact and why, Lepofsky says. On the organization front, Twitter could use contact and list management features such as sorting, tagging, filtering and grouping, he adds.
Meanwhile, a recent positive development was the full integration of Twitter's live-video streaming capability, Periscope, into Twitter. Users won't need to install a separate Periscope app any longer, which raises the question of whether that dedicated app will be deprecated. Twitter had kept Periscope separate on purpose after acquiring it, hoping it could become a standalone hit much like Instagram has for Facebook.
In any event, with Periscope baked into the main Twitter application, video usage on the service could skyrocket in 2017, which means scalability--a one-time problem Twitter managed to remedy through extensive re-engineering--could be a concern for its incoming CTO.
Then there's the question of Twitter being acquired and all of the technical challenges and organizational changes associated with it.
It would not be wise for a traditional enterprise software vendor to buy Twitter, Constellation Research VP and principal analyst Holger Mueller argued in a blog post earlier this year:
Not a good move, these vendors need to stay on top of digital data to power marketing, sales and service - but social media usage and related data exhaust are fickle - owning one major data source will not allow these vendors to do what they need to: Cross social network sensing, execution and operation of related business functions.
A more natural fit would be Google given the synergy Twitter would have with its advertising business, while also giving a big boost to Google's social strategy, Mueller noted.
Finally, it might be easier for Twitter to get acquired if it can develop a big new hit feature. Maybe, as mentioned, Periscope will be it, but that's far from a sure thing. Coming up with Twitter's next killer app is probably the most crucial task for the company's go-forward technical and product leadership.

As the iPhone's 10th anniversary approaches, the ecosystem it spawned reveals areas for Apple to address.

It was certainly a year of ups and downs for Apple, which took steps to shore up many of its products outside the core iOS portable offerings. The Apple Watch got a new user interface, but the smartwatch category drags. Apple TV got a new content navigation app(but not an integrated Apple television service). The redesigned MacBook, of course, got a wee strip of touchy goodness. Even the EarPods evolved into a game-changing wireless successor. But while Apple delivered on its annual iPhone update, there wasn't much beyond a revised Home button with an odd click feel and dual cameras that have beencropping up elsewhere.
While nagging accusations of innovation slowdown have the company defending its pursuit of artificial intelligence and continuing to investigate "interesting areas" such as self-driving cars and augmented reality, here are some simple wins based largely on its competitive environment today.
Revitalize the iPhone. Apple is more than an iPhone company. But when it comes to revenue contribution, no other product it offers even comes close. As we approach its 10th anniversary and smartphone penetration grows, competitive challenges to the iPhone have never been greater. Google itself is attacking from the high-end and midrange phones released from Chinese manufacturers look increasingly impressive.
Rumors have swirled that the next-generation iPhone may have more efficient processors, have an even larger display(bucking mainstream screen downsizing) or used curved glass or plastic but, without further details, those would appear to just be following other companies' leads. However, after the apparent USB-C stopgap that was the Lightning connector, it would be nice to see Apple push wireless charging further mainstream.
Expand Siri integration. In 2016, Apple took steps to turn some of its key apps into platforms of their own. iMessage was one natural choice for this given the year's focus on chatbots. But the one that likely has even greater potential is Siri, Apple's voice agent that in many ways started the AI obsession tsunami circling the company like its new campus.
Today, only a handful of apps types can integrate into Siri, As with the iPhone hardware, though, Apple can expect growing competition here as Google steps up efforts with Google Assistant and Samsung begins to roll out its own agent based on its acquisition of Viv technology designed by Siri's creators.
Unveil a home voice agent approach. I once joked that Apple's answer to Alexa and Google Home could consist of little more than a cannister placed over an iPhone. Beyond the addition of far-field microphones and less reliance on a screen, more thought would surely go into such a product.
With Amazon announcing that it sold nine times as many Echo units as it did last holiday, the business case for a voice-driven home agent is being proven out even as questions remain about their utility. Even Google, which processes billions of voice commands every day via Android phones, sees the value of capturing different kinds of requests and commands within the home; there must be some value there for Apple as pumps up Siri and other AI efforts.

If 2016 wasn't tumultuous enough for you - the world's largest storage company sold itself to Dell - you ain't seen nothin' yet. The pace of change in the storage industry is accelerating - and that's good for us.
The pace of storage change continues to accelerate, and its impact on us continues to grow. Digital storage is central to a digital civilization, and as we grow more digital, we grow more dependent on improvements in storage. Here's what to expect in 2017.

AI

AI will make stored data - and therefore storage- more valuable. When you can take - as we can today - a grainy surveillance video or a blurred face and read a license plate number of determine someone's identity using AI, the value of stored data rises, for good or ill.
As the AI revolution gathers force, expect that researchers will discover even more ways to use machine intelligence to generate value from stored data. In our democracy, I hope, citizens will have some say in the ways AI is used by intelligence agencies and corporations.

NVRAM

We'll see the first NVRAM (non-volatile RAM) in notebooks. This is the year that we'll see the first mainstream NVRAM products from Intel and, I hope, others. Intel's NVRAM SSDs won't be a thousand times faster, but they will be faster, more durable, and, yes, more expensive than NAND flash based SSDs.
But more importantly, we'll see the first notebooks with NVRAM used in conjunction with standard RAM to expand main memory, or, as the industry puts it, as storage class memory (SCM). This is an old idea - remember IBM's System 38? - given new relevance by NVRAM's speed, cost, and density. It's the higher density that will pave the way for servers and notebooks with hundreds of gigabytes and even terabytes of main memory.

ACTIVE ARCHIVES

Active archives will continue to gain performance and popularity in enterprise IT, as CIOs find they're much cheaper and faster than cloud services. IaaS vendor ClearSky Data has already demonstrated that with smart caching, object storage can be as fast as NAS boxes. The greater data integrity, lower OpEx, and simpler operation of object storage systems then seal the deal.
NAS won't go away, as the setup costs for object storage remain higher, but the withering of RAID-based NAS will begin in 2017.

CLOUD

Cloud services will get much more competitive as Microsoft, Google, and IBM continue to work their unique advantages to chip away at Amazon's early lead. Amazon's early dominance of IaaS suggested a continuing lead over all comers, but unlike IBM in the 1960s, Amazon Web Services faces a trio of large, profitable, and uniquely advantaged competitors. Google's brainpower, Microsoft's desktop and research footprint, and IBM's enterprise stronghold are advantages that AWS's early lead won't be able to overcome.
That's good news for the rest of us, as cloud services continue to grow and improve. Weep not for AWS, as the market is growing fast enough for all of them to prosper - for now.

SUPER FAST PCIE/NVME

PCIe/NVMe SSDs will be almost universal on pro notebooks be year end. Apple's new PCIe/NVMe MacBook Pros may have their troubles, but storage performance isn't one of them, and the rest of the industry is jumping on the bandwagon.
With read and write performance well over 2 gigabytes per second, PCIe/NVMe storage leaves SATA SSDs in the dust. That, in turn, boosts the notebook's virtual memory system, giving you a much snappier tool.

THE STORAGE BITS TAKE

Sadly, 2017 won't be wonderful for everyone in the industry. I'm expecting more layoffs from storage companies that have slow to adapt to the accelerating changes in technology and competition.
But for those of us who rely upon and/or manage storage, big improvements keep coming. Now, if the rest of the world could improve as well. . . .

What to expect from Microsoft in 2017


2016 was a largely successful year for Microsoft. Can 2017 be the same? With another new – more impressive – Xbox on the way, momentum in cloud and a great line-up of devices, it’s surely time for Microsoft to take the fight to its great rivals.
One thing seems clear; Microsoft has never looked to the future quite so much. Satya Nadella’s Microsoft isn’t such a long way from Gates’ devices-based idealism and still has some apps and services that just don’t fit. But it seems unthinkable that today’s company would make the same mistakes as Microsoft did under Ballmer.
As our columnist Gary Marshall put it in late 2016: “Now, Microsoft appears to be in a very Apple-y position. It didn’t invent 3D scanning, or Minecraft, or “mixed reality”. But it’s found a way to weave those disparate technologies into Windows and Xbox in a way that really makes sense. Not only that, but it made them exciting. Maybe even sexy. Sexy? From the same firm that tried to sell us a brown Zune?” 
Yep, we’re a million miles away from Zune. Let’s check out what we reckon we’ll get from Microsoft in 2017.

Project Scorpio is coming!

The most exciting thing coming from Microsoft in 2017? Why Project Scorpio of course! The PS4 Pro may support 4K gaming, but it doesn’t have a 4K Blu-ray slot – expect Scorpio to have both. The console was announced at Microsoft's E3 2016 press conference, and it claims it's going to be the most powerful console ever built. 
Expect VR support, six teraflops of 60Hz graphics performance, plus a price around the level of the PS4 Pro. We reckon it’ll be with us around October. Drawing on its extensive console heritage, AMD will also power the Scorpio: "We are proud that Microsoft has chosen to expand their Xbox One family of devices with two new consoles featuring AMD's high-performance semi-custom SoCs that support revolutionary new technologies like HDR, 4K and high fidelity VR to enable the next generation of immersive gaming experiences."

For the creators

Coming in the Spring, the next update to Windows 10 is called the Creators Update. As the name suggests, this is all about the desktop OS making it easier for you to make stuff, pushing forward with 3D content creation. 
Paint 3D is, of course, part of this creative drive, and the revamped app aims to be a dead easy to use 3D art studio, allowing you to do things like snap a photo with your phone camera and pull out an object from it, capturing it in 3D and then sharing it directly. What Microsoft is doing with the Windows 10 Creators Update isn’t just about the creators of today – it’s also thinking about the creators of tomorrow.

Will we finally see Surface Phone?

Microsoft has been chastened by its experience of producing mobile hardware over the last few years. The acquisition of Nokia’s smartphone division was nothing short of disastrous. So could it really be the case that it’ll launch a new phone in 2017? 
We think so, yes. Microsoft’s Surface gear is a strong suite of devices so why not a true, flagship phone? And with Windows 10 Mobile finally showing some of the polish that should have been a hallmark of Windows Phone for over half a decade, perhaps it’s time for Microsoft to do phones properly. 
Recent reports suggest a 5.5-inch display size for one or possibly two Surface Phone devices, while ‘laptop accessories’ (think keyboards and a stylus) have also been mooted. Rumours also point to the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and as much as 6GB of memory so it can run desktop apps and act like a PC (using Windows 10 Continuum) when hooked up to a keyboard, mouse and monitor.

Windows, devices and Cortana

Microsoft’s Build conference is in early May – expect more detail on what the next step is for Windows – will we see another update or two or will Microsoft start to talk about Windows 11? We know that Windows won’t have a major new version in the way it has before, but surely Microsoft can’t stick with Windows 10 forever. 
Also expect a LOT more around Cortana as it moves into other devices – can it really take the fight to Siri and Alexa? Not to mention Google Assistant...

Console cycles meaning nothing  

It’s clear that consoles are now on a more regular update cycle. Microsoft's Albert Pinello: "I hear people use the mobile phone analogy to sort of describe it and I think that I can understand why that makes sense. People use the PC analogy and I think that makes sense. The challenge of course is whenever you say that you always go into the negatives, or you go into how that market - the mobile phone market - is different from consoles.
"Usage models are different, financing is different ... I don't think we want to get the expectation of, like, 'every year there's these very minor changes and we just inundate the market.' We've gotta figure out how this makes sense for console gamers, and respect what makes console gaming great as we go through this transition."

A new Surface Pro

We didn’t get a new Surface Pro in 2016 but surely we will in 2017 – Surface Pro 5, presumably. Also expect a major upgrade to the Surface Book. If we don’t get that, Microsoft’s ‘ultimate laptop’ will start to look passรฉ. And for such a great device that would be a crying shame.

A mixed reality future

It’s clear that Microsoft has a vision for the future beyond the PC, and it’s pretty exciting. Microsoft broadened availability for HoloLens late in 2016, but the developer edition of the device will set you back an even more eye-watering £2,719 in the UK, while it’s AU$4,369 in Australia. It’s too expensive for mainstream use, but Microsoft has teamed up with OEMs to make VR versions of HoloLens at a price point that lands somewhere in between the budget options of Google’s Daydream View and Samsung Gear VR and – at the other end of the scale – PS VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. 
Microsoft is aiming to be on the front foot for both augmented reality and virtual reality, plus 'connected mixed reality experiences' as Microsoft put it (naturally including HoloLens).
At the October 2016 Windows event, Microsoft’s Taj Reid wore a VR headset running Windows 10, enabling him to watch a football match on a giant screen right up close, or engage in a ‘holotour’ in which he wandered about amongst some old Roman buildings.

At the same event Microsoft showed how it’s possible to scan things in the real world using a 3D capture app your phone and make them into 3D models. Reid showed off a demo with HoloLens, showing him browsing in Edge, and taking an object – in this case a stool – and pulling it out from the online shop, to place it in the real-world room to see how it looks next to a table. Pretty nifty, and a feature that should make online shopping decisions a whole lot easier, as you can 'virtually' see what you're buying.

Meanwhile in 2027…

Microsoft reckons that the search box could disappear at the of the next decade – and that VR will be so immersive we can completely escape reality as we know it. 
Mar Gonzalez Franco, researcher with Microsoft Research's New Experiences and Technologies group said: "By 2027 we will have ubiquitous virtual reality systems that will provide such rich multisensorial experiences that will be capable of producing hallucinations which blend or alter perceived reality," she said. 
Search engine usage will change, too. Susan Dumais, deputy managing director of Microsoft Research Lab, envisions the search box's complete disappearance by 2027. Instead, "It will be replaced by search functionality that is more ubiquitous, embedded and contextually sensitive. We are seeing the beginnings of this transformation with spoken queries, especially in mobile and smart home settings." Now that’s pretty cool, eh?

With phone display sizes getting bigger and bigger, the biggest way of distinguishing between Samsung's Galaxy phones and Galaxy Notes has been the stylus support for the latter - but that could be about to change over the next 12 months.
Rumors coming out of China are suggesting that when the Samsung Galaxy S8shows up, it's going to come with the option of an S Pen accessory, the stylus that until now has been exclusively bundled with (and integrated into) the Note devices.
In fact, reports suggest that some Galaxy S8 prototypes did indeed feature an integrated stylus. Apparently that idea has now been shelved, but you can still pick up an S Pen as an added extra to use with your S8 phone.

Shuffling the Samsung pack

So what does this mean for the Galaxy S8 and indeed the Note 8 - if the rumors are true? It might point to an even larger pair of screen sizes for next years phones, and the 5.7-inch and 6.2-inch display size points have been mooted.
It could also suggest that Samsung is planning to ditch the Note series completely and focus all of its attention on the phones - one of which would effectively become the new Note - though that does contradict earlier reports.
Based on what we've heard so far, it sounds like Samsung is intent on pulling out all the stops to make sure its 2017 is much better than its 2016 was.
