The document-leaking organization proposes a database to track verified users' personal details, like political party, family members and financial ties.
WikiLeaks, the organization that's published US diplomatic communications and purported emails from Hillary Clinton campaign chief John Podesta, has proposed tracking personal details of Twitter users with verified identities.
"We are thinking of making an online database with all 'verified' twitter accounts & their family/job/financial/housing relationships," the WikiLeaks Task Force said on Twitter on Friday. In another tweet it said, "We are looking for clear discrete (father/shareholding/party membership) variables that can be put into our AI software."
In response to a concern that such a move could harm privacy, WikiLeaks responded, "No it is to develop a metric to understand influence networks based on proximity graphs," and proceeded to defend the idea with further tweets. But later in the evening, the original controversial tweet describing the idea was deleted.
Verified accounts sport a blue checkmark to indicate Twitter has checked identification credentials to ensure Twitter users are who they say they are. It's widely used with celebrities, politicians and members of the press, but Twitter has expanded the verification program more widely.
Also on Friday, Twitter's Safety account tweeted that "posting another person's private and confidential information is a violation of the Twitter Rules."
WikiLeaks didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Twitter declined to comment beyond reiterating the Safety account information.

Nokia and Starman are working away on building Europe's first nationwide 10-gigabit residential network, which will cover Estonia.

Last summer, Finnish telecoms equipment firm Nokia and Starman, the largest cable operator in the Baltic states, announced they will be deploying Europe's first nationwide 10 Gigabit Ethernet passive optical network.
Just a few weeks before the 10G EPON deal was made public, Starman, which was bought by Finnish telco Elisa for €151m ($157m) in mid-December, said it is taking 10-gigabit network tests from the lab into the field.
Starman CTO Jaanus Erlemann says in the current situation the company is definitely not in a hurry, because the goal is to work out the best and most reliable solution for the long term.
"Our current DOCSIS3.0 network is of very high quality and we're able to provide a 500Mbps downstream service all across our footprint. This gives us ample room for conducting thorough tests on the new EPON technology without having to rush," Erlemann tells ZDNet.
He hopes that the higher network speeds available to customers in the near future could also encourage content providers to improve their production technology and broadcasting capabilities to provide full HD or even next-level content.
Experience from the US, where the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee, introduced the world's first 10-gigabit internet service across a large community-wide territory, suggests that the high-speed technology can create new jobs and millions in economic and social benefits.
Erlemann stresses that the mere launch of new technology is not a goal in itself. What really matters is the eventual quality of service and giving customers added value.
"Of course we do have internal deadlines and plans but we'd like to officially announce any specific future plans at a time when we've conducted all the necessary tests of the technology and procedures and we're ready for a wider rollout," he says.
Erlemann acknowledges that being the first on the field might require more resources because Starman won't be able to learn from other companies' mistakes. But it is ready to take that risk.
The firm values the opportunity to develop new technology with Nokia to keep the company at the edge of the innovation.
"Obviously Nokia is having contacts with various European cable operators. But I'm glad the cooperation between Nokia and Starman is the very first cooperation made public in Europe. During the tests our teams are jointly going through various business and technical use cases, looking for the best solutions and practices for the future network," he says.
Constantly creating software for the various system components takes time and resources from both partners, but Erlemann believes it gives Starman specialists valuable experience for future network development and maintenance.
"From our cooperation of the past half year I can say with confidence that this is truly the best way to learn and develop competences," he says.
Nokia was chosen as a partner, because after analyzing different options Starman decided to move on with the Turbo EPON option instead of GPON, which is strongly represented in the portfolios of other technology producers such as Huawei and ZTE.
"If I had to name a few reasons why EPON technology developed by Nokia was chosen, it's the availability of DPoE [DOCSIS provisioning over Ethernet], a cost-efficient upgrade to 10G EPON, and, as a very important factor, Nokia's commitment to support Starman throughout the project in competence development," he says.
"It's not Starman implementing EPON in Estonia but it's Starman and Nokia jointly building next-generation access network in Estonia."
Starman has set a goal of bringing the 10-gigabit network to at least 50,000 customers in Estonia in five years. Because the new network is very reliable and its maintenance relatively cheap, the company is planning to create a model for cooperation with the public sector, so it can also be expanded to remote rural areas.
"Expansion of a high-capacity network outside the cities or densely-populated areas is actually not so much related to the choice of any particular technology or vendor. It's first and foremost a commercial question," he says.
"For network development in scarcely-populated regions, one needs to find the best model for both end user and service provider to cover the investment. In short, a viable business model, in cooperation with the private and public sector, should be found for connecting customers on the last mile."
The company's calculations show that investments in fiber-optic network conversion in brownfield sites will pay off in about four years, not taking into account related one-off investments and reduction in the cost of operations.
The good news for customers is they shouldn't expect a significant rise in the prices of services from the introduction of 10-gigabit internet.
"Here the main questions are about commercial decisions and value added to the customers. Merely offering a different technology, while the service parameters and value for customers remain the same, should not bring along a change in the service price. But there should be new opportunities and service quality offered to the customer," Erlemann says.

Plenty of work remains on the table for Twitter's technical teams in the wake of Adam Messinger's departure.


Twitter has been making the news lately for not-so-happy reasons, such as its plummeting stock price and failure--so far--to find an acquirer. The company has also seen a series of top executives leave the company in recent months and the most significant is CTO Adam Messinger, a former Oracle development executive who logged five years at Twitter.
Messinger said in a tweet that he's leaving to "take some time off" and his departure seems amicable enough from the outside. Twitter's VP of engineering, Edward Ho, will assume Messinger's duties and report directly to CEO Jack Dorsey, according to the New York Times.
Messinger had a broader remit at Twitter than the CTO job might suggest. In January, after a previous wave of executive departures, Messinger gained oversight of engineering, consumer product, design and research, user services and Fabric, Twitter's mobile development platform.
Whether Ho is given a long-term shot at the CTO job, or is just keeping the seat warm for an outside candidate remains to be seen. In either case, Twitter's next CTO has plenty to work on in 2017.
"Consistency is my biggest technical complaint," says Constellation Research VP and principal analyst Alan Lepofsky. "I use twitter.com, tweetdeck.twitter.com and the twitter mobile apps on Android and iPad, and the features available are different on each! For example, the ability to add an image, then tag people in the image (instead of adding their names in the 140 char) is not consistent."
"I think hashtags need some type of bubble help, where people can expand them to understand what they mean and get more information," Lepofsky adds. "And clearly, the noise-to-value ratio needs work. Twitter needs to become far more personalized, understanding the content I want and the people I want to engage with."
Another plus would be improved analytics that help users better understand which of their tweets have had the most impact and why, Lepofsky says. On the organization front, Twitter could use contact and list management features such as sorting, tagging, filtering and grouping, he adds.
Meanwhile, a recent positive development was the full integration of Twitter's live-video streaming capability, Periscope, into Twitter. Users won't need to install a separate Periscope app any longer, which raises the question of whether that dedicated app will be deprecated. Twitter had kept Periscope separate on purpose after acquiring it, hoping it could become a standalone hit much like Instagram has for Facebook.
In any event, with Periscope baked into the main Twitter application, video usage on the service could skyrocket in 2017, which means scalability--a one-time problem Twitter managed to remedy through extensive re-engineering--could be a concern for its incoming CTO.
Then there's the question of Twitter being acquired and all of the technical challenges and organizational changes associated with it.
It would not be wise for a traditional enterprise software vendor to buy Twitter, Constellation Research VP and principal analyst Holger Mueller argued in a blog post earlier this year:
Not a good move, these vendors need to stay on top of digital data to power marketing, sales and service - but social media usage and related data exhaust are fickle - owning one major data source will not allow these vendors to do what they need to: Cross social network sensing, execution and operation of related business functions.
A more natural fit would be Google given the synergy Twitter would have with its advertising business, while also giving a big boost to Google's social strategy, Mueller noted.
Finally, it might be easier for Twitter to get acquired if it can develop a big new hit feature. Maybe, as mentioned, Periscope will be it, but that's far from a sure thing. Coming up with Twitter's next killer app is probably the most crucial task for the company's go-forward technical and product leadership.

The popular messaging app has increased its daily users number by 35 percent in the last twelve months.

The usage of popular messaging app WeChat continues to expand, with the number of daily users exceeding 768 million in September, up 35 percent over the same period last year, according to a year-end report on WeChat released by the Chinese technology giant Tencent on Wednesday.
The report, which unveiled a series of key figures of the most popular messaging app in China, said 50 percent of WeChat users spent 90 minutes on the application every day.
Typical WeChat users are those born in the 1980s and 1990s, accounting for 65 percent of the overall users, and have sent 80 percent of the total messages.
Youngsters aged between 17 and 21, and seniors over 55 years, are responsible 14 percent and 1 percent of overall population on the app, according to the report.
Overall messages sent through the app in 2016 surged by 67 percent over last year. Typical WeChat users sent 74 messages on the daily basis, while seniors over 55 years sent 44 messages every day.
The use of voice chat and video chat functions on WeChat reached 100 million daily calls this year, up 180 percent from 2015.
The report said typical WeChat users walked 5,900 steps daily, while seniors above 55 walked 6,700. WeChat users sent out on average of 28 "red envelopes" on the app every month, with an average amount of 580 yuan ($83).

Chrome will soon mark some HTTP pages as 'non-secure'



Google's first wave of security changes to convert webmasters to encrypted HTTPS target pages that ask for login data or credit card information.

Google plans to start the new year with a security message.
Beginning next month, the company will tag web pages that include login or credit card fields with the message "Not Secure" if the page is not served using HTTPS, the secure version of the internet protocol.

The company on Tuesday began sending messages through its Google Search Console, a tool for webmasters, warning them of the changes that take place starting in January 2017.
The changes are supported in version 56 or later of the Chrome browser.
The move is a first step in a long-term plan to clearly mark as non-secure all HTTP sites regardless of their content. In upcoming releases of Chrome, for example, Google will label HTTP pages as "not secure" in Incognito mode.
There is no timeline for when webmasters are required to switch all their pages to HTTPS.
Googles plans go along with on-going efforts to motivate consumers and G Suite users to adopt more secure login methods.
HTTPS is designed to protect the integrity and the confidentiality of data as it moves between an end-user computer and a website. The protocol protects personal and other sensitive information such as login credentials.
The transmission is secured by the Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol, which provides encryption, data integrity and authentication. The authentication piece, among other reasons, is designed to combat man-in-the-middle attacks and promote end-user trust in a website.
In a blog updated a few weeks ago, Google noted that it "recently hit a milestone with more than half of Chrome desktop page loads now served over HTTPS. In addition, since the time we released our HTTPS report in February, 12 more of the top 100 websites have changed their serving default from HTTP to HTTPS."
Converting pages from HTTP to HTTPS comes with a few common pitfalls, such as not keeping certificates or TLS libraries up to date. Converts also may see temporary fluctuations in their site rankings.
Google wrote on its Google + page: "Enabling HTTPS on your whole site is important, but if your site collects passwords, payment info, or any other personal information, it's critical to use HTTPS. Without HTTPS, bad actors can steal this confidential data. #NoHacked."

The lead up to the official debut of HTML 5 in October 2014 was a very big deal. Now two years later HTML 5.1 was declared an official standard on November 1.

With HTML 5 work was ongoing for more than seven years and the standard replaced HTML 4.x which had been in place for a decade. HTML 5.1 in contrast is a very incremental step up, dealing with minor items that fell out from the original HTML 5 approach.

The features that HTML 5.1 add are:


    •    The picture and srcset attributes allow responsive image selection.
    •    The details andsummary elements enable authors to provide extended information that users can choose whether to read.
    •    The menuitem and type="context" attribute value enable authors to add functionality to the browser’s context menu.
    •    The requestAnimationFrame API allows for more efficient animation.
    •    enqueueJob and nextJob help explain Promise resolution in terms of microtasks.
    •    The rev attribute for links, primarily to support RDFa (previously defined in HTML 4).
    •    HTMLMediaElement and srcObject objects.
    •    Enable cross-origin track and EventSource and cross-origin content for ImageBitmap in canvas.
    •    event-source-error, event-track-error and event-track-load events for media fetching.
    •    onrejectionhandled and onunhandledrejection and APIs for tracking promise rejection.
    •    HTMLTableCaptionElement, HTMLTableSectionElement, HTMLTableRowElement, for HTML table elements.
    •    history.scrollRestoration to control where a users' view is directed when navigating through their history.
    •    IDL [SameObject], for some objects that return collections.
    •    Add "noopener" to rel and window to allow for browsing contexts to be separated.
    •    nonce attribute on script and style to support the use of Content Security Policy.


A few interesting things, but nothing really groundbreaking and nothing that will actually impact the end-user experience today either. As was the case with the debut of HTML 5, browser vendors have long since moved waiting for the W3C before using new web technologies.

The big push now from the web vendors is in support of native code, things like 'C' in the browser, which has been talked about for many years, but has never been implemented in a truly standardized way.

You’ll have to wait for 5G on your phone, but ultra-fast wireless will deliver speeds that blow away your cable connection.

You’ve probably heard the breathless hype about the new wireless standard called 5G. As I’ve written before it’s not exactly on our doorstep. But trials by a number of major carriers have gone well, and some industry analysts are predicting that the ultra-fast technology will start to be deployed as soon as 2020.
When it arrives, though, it’s likely to be deployed in a way that may surprise you: Expect to see Google and a few wireless carriers using it to provide ultra-fast broadband to your home or office without the trouble and expense of installing fiber cables. By ultra-fast, I mean speeds of 1 Gbps or even more.
Disappointingly though, 5G technology that will make your smartphones download data many times faster than the current standard -- 4G LTE -- is still years away.
“Fixed wireless is the only business case for 5G,” said Bengst Nordstrom, a long-time telecom exec now CEO of Northstream, a consultancy based in Stockholm. Carriers in Europe and North America have got to do something different because their core business is getting saturated and revenues have been flat, he said recently at a conference in Helsinki.

Fixed wireless in the works

Verizon and AT&T, along with Google, are working towards fixed wireless deployments even though the 5G standard is not yet fully baked, Samsung vice president Wonil Roh predicted recently. Roh visualizes a network in which carriers put base stations on poles that are already connected to a high-speed network (or can easily be connected) and then beam a 5G signal to a home. That signal would allow the consumer to connect to the Internet at speeds of 1 Gbps or even faster.
A plan such as the one Roh envisions would obviate the need to bury fiber cables in trenches, an expensive and disruptive process.
Google disappointed many people when it put the brakes on plans to deploy gigabit internet to cities across the country and laid off much of Google Fiber’s workforce. However, the search giant purchased Webpass, a high-speed wireless ISP, in June and views that technology as an alternative to fiber cables, Craig Barratt, who oversees Google Fiber, said earlier this year.
That technology would provide high-speed connections for many consumers and prod big ISPs to speed up their fiber deployments. Comcast, AT&T and, to a lesser extent, Verizon, are bringing gigabit Internet to a growing number of markets, but typically those highly touted deployments only cover selected neighborhoods. Sometimes the coverage is so sparse that industry insiders refer to their announcements as “fiber to the press release.”

Actual speed my vary

5G is really fast, though the exact speeds will vary depending on how the technology is deployed. Ericsson, for example, said it had achieved 5 Gbps on a testbed for 5G. That's about 50 times faster than today's fastest LTE networks. It will also require a much denser deployment of cell towers than those used for older technologies and that could prompt a good deal of opposition from communities.
The move to 5G won’t happen all that quickly, but it does promise a future that will include faster broadband and cellular connections that will leave today’s standards in the dust.

Inmarsat, Deutsche Telekom, Nokia, and Thales have completed test flights of high-speed internet for air passengers.

A project to build a high-speed internet service for air passengers has reached a key milestone.
Inmarsat, Deutsche Telekom, Nokia and Thales say they have completed a set of test flights over the UK for their European Aviation Network (EAN), which combines satellite and air-to-ground 4G services to create in-flight broadband for airline passengers.
The service combines Inmarsat's S-band geostationary satellites with a 4G ground network made up of about 300 Deutsche Telekom ground towers across the 28 European Union states to provide high-speed broadband in the air.
The flights serve to test the performance of the EAN system, including the onboard equipment from Thales and the ground network provided by Deutsche Telekom and Nokia.
The trials have tested whether the system could successfully attach to the ground system, and featured a broadband video conference with both sides connected via the dedicated EAN LTE mobile network.
In-flight internet access will be a $1bn revenue business by 2020, according to Inmarsat, with half of passenger aircraft offering in-flight broadband by 2022.
The service is designed specifically for high-traffic flight paths and busy airport hubs and will provide 50Gbps of bandwidth, which is said means passengers should get a "reliable high-bandwidth broadband service in the air that matches their expectations on the ground."
Since the project was announced in September 2015, Deutsche Telekom and Nokia have been rolling out the ground component while Inmarsat and Thales have worked on the satellite communication. With the test flight program now under way, the EAN will be introduced in mid-2017, the companies said.
The LTE ground network for EAN differs from 'normal' LTE networks as it needs to work at speeds of up to 1,200km/h (746mph), at cruising altitudes requiring cells with a range of up to 150km (93 miles).

Internet Archive looks to take digital collection to Canada

The Internet Archive is looking to replicate its database in Canada in the face of potentially increased surveillance powers under a Donald Trump presidency in the United States.
The San Francisco-based organisation said that it is seeking donations for an "Internet Archive of Canada", which had been set as a goal in response to the November 9 election result and the greater web restrictions that will likely follow.
"[The election result] was a firm reminder that institutions like ours, built for the long term, need to design for change," the post says. "For us, it means keeping our cultural materials safe, private, and perpetually accessible. It means preparing for a web that may face greater restrictions ... government surveillance is not going away; indeed, it looks like it will increase."
Increased surveillance powers will be a priority under the Trump presidency, according toBloomberg, with the president-elect recently appointing Jeff Sessions as attorney-general and Mike Pompeo as director of the CIA -- both of whom advocated government spying under George W Bush's stringent surveillance policy.
The surveillance laws that were overturned or amended following whistleblower Edward Snowden's revelations are likely to revert back to how they were under Bush, the report added, including mass data gathering, internet activity, and email content collection.
Earlier this month, encrypted email provider ProtonMail encouraged users to switch to encrypted email following the election result.
"Regardless of which side of the political spectrum you are on, Trump's control over the NSA is now an indisputable fact," it said.
"As a federal agency, however, the activities of NSA are governed by federal law, in particular, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. However, with Republican control over both houses of Congress, President Trump would have broad power to rewrite FISA as he sees fit, or introduce a new law."
Trevor Timm, executive director at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, warned that the US' vast intelligence-gathering machinery will be turned over to a "maniac".
"[Trump will] control a vast, unaccountable national security and military apparatus unparalleled in world history," Timm said. "The nightmare that civil libertarians have warned of for years has now tragically come true: Instead of dismantling the surveillance state and war machine, the Obama administration and Democrats institutionalized it -- and it will soon be in the hands of a maniac."
Snowden had previously warned of the surveillance threat of a new leader immediately following his disclosure of National Security Agency (NSA) and Five Eyes documents in 2013.
"A new leader will be elected, they'll flip the switch, say that because of the crisis, because of the dangers that we face in the world ... some new and unpredicted threat ... we need more authority, we need more power," he said in his interview with the Guardian.
"And there will be nothing the people can do at that point to oppose it."
Despite Internet Archive looking to back up its data in Canada, one Snowden document revealed the close collaboration between the NSA and the country's Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC).
The document mentioned "the exchange of liaison officers and integrees, joint projects, shared activities, and a strong desire for closer collaboration in the area of cyberdefence", as well as Canada being a large consumer of US intelligence-gathering equipment.
Canada is also one of the Five Eyes nations, along with the US, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. The alliance allows the sharing of citizen internet and surveillance data among members.
Internet Archive collects and stores a vast collection of webpages for public access. Its Wayback Machine saves 300 million web pages each week to ensure that "no one will ever be able to change the past just because there is no digital record of it".
The organisation says it has only 150 staff members running one of the top 250 websites in the world, and due to its privacy policy does not collect IP addresses or accept ads that track user behaviour.

Mozilla's Firefox backed further from the brink last month, and Mac owners continued to abandon Apple's Safari, new data released today showed.
Also, last month, Microsoft lost another 23 million Internet Explorer and Edge users.
According to analytics vendor Net Applications, Firefox's user share -- an estimate of the proportion of all personal computer users who ran that browser -- climbed eight-tenths of a percentage point last month to finish at 11.9%, its highest mark since December 2015. In the last three months, Firefox has regained 4.2 points, recovering from a near-death experience when in August it recorded a user share of just 7.7%.
Firefox's increases, however puzzling in the face of years-long declines of the open-source browser's user share, were legitimized by three straight months of gains, showing that the recovery was not a short-term counting glitch. However, November's boost was less than half that of September's or October's, signaling that Firefox's rebound has limits.

Safari went in the opposite direction, losing one-tenth of a percentage point to end at 3.6%, the second consecutive sub-4% month. Until October, Safari had kept its head above the 4% water mark for the past six years.
Safari's place as the Mac's preferred browser has also been under attack. The browser's share of all Macs -- Net Applications also estimates global operating system user shares -- slumped to a new low of 54%. Just over half of all Macs owners, in other words, ran the OS's default browser last month.
In the past 12 months, Safari as a percentage of all Macs has declined from 62%, putting OS X and macOS users in the same boat as those running Windows. The latter have abandoned Microsoft's default browsers -- Internet Explorer (IE) and Edge -- in favor of Google's Chrome, the most popular browser on the planet since April. Net Applications' data implied that Mac owners have done the same, with significant numbers dumping Safari for Chrome, or less likely, for Firefox.
Chrome gained eight-tenths of a point in user share during November, putting the browser at 55.8%. Chrome's torrid growth -- in one year, its user share grew by 78% -- has cooled over the past three months, averaging just six-tenths of a percentage point in that stretch. (The three months before that, Chrome gained an average of 2.8 points, or more than four times the more recent period.)
Google's browser was again the biggest beneficiary of Microsoft's plunge in browser relevance.
The combined user share of IE and Edge ended November at 26.9%, a decline of 1.5 percentage points. The month's drop was less dramatic than October's near record, but it was the eighth in a row of 1.5 points or more.
Using Net Applications' data for browser and operating system user share, as well as Microsoft's claim that about 1.5 billion PCs run Windows worldwide,Computerworld calculated that IE lost approximately 23 million users last month. In the last 12 months, more than a third of a billion users have dumped IE.
If declines continue at the rate of the last 12 months, IE and Edge will fall below 25% this month, and under 20% by March 2017.

Everyone of us uses Facebook;so we can reach to a lot news using it.But,not all the news that we read in facebook are correct.

Facebook has a big problem with fake news stories that are spread on the social network, and now it’s hoping users can help. People are reporting that Facebook is asking them survey questions to help determine whether news headlines are accurate.
It’s not clear how many people are included in this survey or what, exactly, Facebook plans to do with the information it collects. Nevertheless, this appears to be part of Facebook’s plans to deal with the issues of clickbait and fake news that are plaguing the social network.
“To what extent do you think that this link’s title withholds key details of the story?” reads one of the questions. While the second is, “To what extent do you think that this link’s title uses misleading language?” Respondents then have five responses they can choose: Not at all, Slightly, Somewhat, Very much, or Completely.

What’s odd about these survey questions is that they are attached to posts from well known media outlets such as The Philadelphia Inquirer and Rolling Stone. Granted, there aren’t enough examples made public to see if less reputable sites are being polled as well. As we saw during our partisan news test on Facebookthere are tons of fake news sites pumping stories into Facebook that the social network could poll users about.




Nevertheless, it’s clear that Facebook is not automatically whitelisting established media organizations. That suggests the test, or at least parts of it, could be judging users just as much as they are judging news stories.
After all, fake news and clickbait headlines spread because of users who either can’t tell when a news story is fake or aren’t reading further before sharing. And almost everyone is susceptible to sharing a fake story or something with a misleading headline.
The story behind the story: Failing to dig further can sometimes have harmless results. In October, for example, people on social media—including some of my own friends on Facebook—shared news of the death of programmer Dennis Ritchie. The creator of Unix and the C programming language died in 2011, but people failed to check the date of the article and it didn’t take long for the news to go viral.
The results of fake news are not always so amusing, however, as we saw recently with the Pizzagate shooting.
It’s good to see Facebook making efforts to curb both fake news and clickbait on the social network. But it’s not remotely clear what the aims of this survey might actually be.

Vine users say goodbye to the much loved application.

Vine will be discontinued in the coming months and users of the much loved app are at a loss for words.

The application was launched January 2013 and at the time it was a unique way to upload videos. It allowed users to record and upload six second videos which were mostly funny, memorable and catchy. It called to people’s creative side and was a hilarious success at the time.

Twitter bought the application in 2012 for a reported $30million. Three years ago Vine was in a class of its own, it made users create six second loop videos that would quickly have people laughing and creating their own videos. However, Twitter neglected to make the application dynamic in the years to follow, making it stagnant and unprogressive. Many would argue that it failed to compete with its competition, Snapchat and Instagram.

Now, after only three years in the game, it has come to a not so funny end.
In a bid to calm user’s Vine explained that the app and its website would not abruptly disappear.

We value you, and your Vines, and are going to do this the right way. You’ll be able to access and download your Vines. We’ll be keeping the website online because we think it’s important to still be able to watch all the incredible Vines that have been made. You will be notified before we make any changes to the app or website.


We will miss you Vine…you and your six seconds of total laughs.
