Google patches severe Android boot mode vulnerability

Google patches severe Android boot mode vulnerability

The critical vulnerability left Android devices open to denial of service and privilege escalation attacks.
Symantec

Google has resolved a dangerous Android vulnerability which allowed attackers to reboot Nexus devices into custom boot modes, leading to spying and remote attacks.
Patched as part of Google's January Android security bulletin, the flaw, CVE-2016-8467, grants cyberattackers the ability to use PC malware or malicious chargers to reboot a Nexus 6 or 6P device and implement a special boot configuration, or boot mode, which instructs Android to turn on various extra USB interfaces.
According to IBM X-Force Application Security Research Team researchers Roee Hay and Michael Goberman, who revealed further details of the vulnerability in a blog post, the flaw gives attackers access to interfaces which offer additional control over a compromised device.
In particular, the Nexus 6 the modem diagnostics interface is of concern as accessing this platform gives attackers access to the modem, which compromises "confidentiality and integrity," the team says.
Once an attacker has gained access to the modem they can intercept phone calls, for example. It would also be possible to sniff mobile data packets and grab information including GPS coordinates of the device for tracking, place phone calls, steal call information and either access or change nonvolatile (NV) items or the EFS partition of a device.
IBM says that if Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is enabled on the device, PC malware or a malicious charger can boot the target device with the special boot mode configuration. Once connected, the user is forced to accept the PC or charger permanently, a few commands are issued, and the device is rebooted.
"Every future boot from this point forward will have the boot mode configuration enabled," IBM says. This means the attack is persistent and no longer requires ADB to run, although it still requires USB access."
"Therefore, the attacker only needs the victim to enable ADB once," the researchers added. "Moreover, a lucky attacker might wait for the device to be in fastboot mode, which requires no authorization from the victim. This, however, is less likely."
If attackers have physical access to the device, they can also reboot it into the custom boot mode manually.
These issues are less severe on the Nexus 6P due to firmware protections, however, a quirk in the device type means attackers can open ADB sessions even if the mode has been disabled.
In addition, due to the inclusion of additional USB interfaces in both device types, attackers can also access other interfaces to send or on SMS messages and potentially bypass two-factor authentication, escalate privileges, change radio settings and access a wide range of mobile device features.
Google has now patched the flaw by forbidding a locked bootloader to boot with the dangerous boot modes.
In December, researchers revealed that a new variant of Android malware called Gooligan was exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities to steal sensitive user data.

Which new Daydream VR phone is right for you? :Pixel vs. Moto Z vs. ZenFone AR vs. Mate 9 Pro vs. Axon 7

Jealous that Pixel owners get to have all the VR fun? Pick up one of these newly compatible Android smartphones and you'll be Daydreamin' in no time

When Google revealed its Daydream View in October, it was announced alongside the Google Pixel and Pixel XL. These two "phones by Google" and headset were a match made in VR heaven in some ways, but that also meant you could only experience Daydream by using a Pixel.
After that, Google added compatibility to the Moto Z. Now it's expanding the list of Daydream-compatible phones a bit more with the Huawei Mate 9 Pro, Asus ZenFone AR and ZTE Axon 7.
If you're in the market for a Daydream phone, you have a few options to choose from. The six compatible phones bring different things to the table. For example, the Pixel phones will automatically get the latest Android updates as they're made available, while the Moto Z has the option to attach Moto Mod accessories. The three new phones offer their own unique features, like the dual cameras in the Mate 9 Pro, the dual SIM in the Axon 7 or Tango AR compatibility in the ZenFone AR. So which phone you pick depends on the features you want -- and the price, of course.
Luckily CNET's got your back and came up with the following chart for easy side-by-side comparison.

Google Assistant will soon let you bark commands at your Android TV

Google Assistant will soon let you bark commands at your Android TV

Move over Siri and Apple TV, there's a new virtual assistant in smart TV town.

Android TV watchers rejoice, you'll soon be able to yell commands at your television set. Google on Wednesday announced via a blog that Google Assistant, its Siri-like virtual assistant, is coming to Android TV.
The feature, which allows you to use voice commands to play content, enquire about content or just ask how long the commute to work will take (if you haven't worked that out by yourself yet), will be available on Android TVs in the US that run Android 6.0 Marshmallow or Android 7.0 Nougat.
Nvidia announced at its CES 2017 press conference that its Nvidia Shield Android TV, available later this month, will be the first device to take advantage of the update.
"You'll also see the Assistant come to other new surfaces," wrote Google's Android TV director Sascha Pruete, "like smartwatches running Android Wear 2.0, Android-powered in-car infotainment systems and many other types of devices."
The 2017 Galaxy A7, A5 and A3 are aimed at young, trendy phone buyers who may be looking for devices that don't cost a fortune.

Samsung is kicking off 2017 with budget-phone buyers in mind.
The electronics giant on Monday introduced its updated Galaxy A series phones: the 5.7-inch A7, 5.2-inch A5 and 4.7-inch A3. The 2017 versions of these phones come with a handful of upgrades, like IP68 water and dust resistance and improved 16-megapixel front- and rear-facing cameras.
Samsung's Galaxy A range of phones is designed for a younger, trendier crowd who can't afford its high-end flagships. While many eyes are trained to the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8, those seeking a lower-cost phone may want to shift focus to the 2017 A series.
The Galaxy A will be available in Russia in early January and later expanded to global markets. Samsung didn't immediately respond to a request for more information on availability and pricing.

The S Pen could be an optional extra for the Galaxy S8

The S Pen could be an optional extra for the Galaxy S8

With phone display sizes getting bigger and bigger, the biggest way of distinguishing between Samsung's Galaxy phones and Galaxy Notes has been the stylus support for the latter - but that could be about to change over the next 12 months.
Rumors coming out of China are suggesting that when the Samsung Galaxy S8shows up, it's going to come with the option of an S Pen accessory, the stylus that until now has been exclusively bundled with (and integrated into) the Note devices.
In fact, reports suggest that some Galaxy S8 prototypes did indeed feature an integrated stylus. Apparently that idea has now been shelved, but you can still pick up an S Pen as an added extra to use with your S8 phone.

Shuffling the Samsung pack

So what does this mean for the Galaxy S8 and indeed the Note 8 - if the rumors are true? It might point to an even larger pair of screen sizes for next years phones, and the 5.7-inch and 6.2-inch display size points have been mooted.
It could also suggest that Samsung is planning to ditch the Note series completely and focus all of its attention on the phones - one of which would effectively become the new Note - though that does contradict earlier reports.
Based on what we've heard so far, it sounds like Samsung is intent on pulling out all the stops to make sure its 2017 is much better than its 2016 was.

Google snaps up smartwatch OS startup Cronologics to boost Android Wear

Google snaps up smartwatch OS startup Cronologics to boost Android Wear

The startup originally created by Google employees is coming home.

Cronologics

Google has acquired the team behind Cronologics, a company focused on the development of operating systems suitable for wearable devices.
Started in 2014 by former Google business employees, the company hoped to one day create the go-to platform for smartwatches. With the introduction of Android Wear and Apple watchOS, this dream did not come to fruition, but there is still a future for the startup's team.
In a statement on the Cronologics website, the team said they are joining Google to "help grow the portfolio of watches powered by Android Wear."
"We see strong alignment with Android Wear's mission and look forward to working with our new colleagues at Google to continue pushing the frontier of wearable technology and smartwatches with Android Wear 2.0 and beyond," the team said.
"We've loved working with you, and we look forward to new opportunities to serve you and partner with you in our new life at Google," Chronologics added.
Only a few months ago, the company launched the CoWatch following a successful crowdfunding campaign. The smart, wearable device is compatible with Amazon's Alexa voice assistant and is also both Google Android and Apple iOS compatible -- but it remains to be seen whether CoWatch will be on sale for much longer.
The release of Android Wear 2.0 was originally set for 2016 but has been pushed back to early next year.
It may be that the acquisition has been made in order to boost Android Wear's voice recognition capabilities and we will see such improvements to the operating system in the future.

It's time for you also to join our fans and start getting the latest news of technology and gaming, the tutorials, the reviews, and a lot more! Why you don't just take a look !

Today, we brought you the new Samsung Galaxy S8's new features, characteristics,Date of release and price! So you could start thinking of buying this incredible smartphone!

It is the turn of the Galaxy S8, to be at the center of the corridor noises; From the novelties to the features,to the price or the release date,we summarize everything unofficial about the Samsung's future smartphone.

It's go again. In 2017, Samsung will renew its Galaxy S, it will be the eighth edition, and it should be simply baptized Galaxy S8 according to the scheme traditionally used by the South Korean brand. In the same vein, it should be announced at the end of February at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), a trade fair dedicated to mobility held annually in Barcelona.

The Galaxy S8 is a very special challenge for the firm this year as it will have the heavy task of forgetting the disaster of the Galaxy Note 7 "explosives", compensating the losses generated and restoring Samsung's image. That's a lot for a single phone that's going to have to hit very hard.

It was already the case every year, and it is even more so in 2016 for the reasons mentioned above: the rumors are going well. In order to know what to expect, we offer you again this year a summary, in chronological order, of the rumors on the subject.

Summary of rumors

UHD

The first rumor worthy of interest regarding the Galaxy S8 relates to its screen: Samsung would choose an Ultra HD definition. The underlying idea would be to improve the image as part of a virtual reality use with the Gear VR.

Curved for everyone

Samsung officially said that the curved borders used on the "Edge" versions of its terminals would become the symbol of its high-end phones. It is therefore not surprising that we learn that Samsung has ordered its "Display" division of curved screens of 5.1 and 5.5 inches. Exit therefore the "flat" version of the Galaxy S. If they are both Edge, it will nevertheless have to find a new name to distinguish them.

Jack is gone

Following in the footsteps of Moto Z and the iPhone 7, Samsung could also remove the jack connector from its smartphone in order to refine it. It would be replaced by USB C.

Early check-in

To make forget the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco more quickly, an analyst believes that the "most pragmatic" decision would be to take the phone out sooner than usual by the end of 2016. Analyst speech. We do not believe it too much.

Fast and Furious

A data sheet attributed to the Galaxy S8 appears on Weibo, it mentions an Exynos 8895 processor, 6 GB RAM and 64 GB storage and a battery of 4200 mAh. Less likely, we also talk about a sensor of 30 mpx and a picoprojector.

Double photo sensor

According to a Korean daily, usually reliable, Samsung would yield to the fashion of dual photo sensor. The firm would also endow it with an iris scanner. Logical since the Galaxy Note 7 could just be unlocked at a glance.

Bixby is the new Siri

Samsung officially announces that future products will integrate the voice assistant "Bixby" resulting from the acquisition of Viv. The S8 is not directly named, but it could be more logical. It is learned shortly after that the phone would even have a dedicated key to access it.

A S8 "Plus" of 6.2 inches

Rumor a little crazy: the Galaxy S8 would not retain sizes similar to those of the S7. Samsung would opt for 5.7 and 6.2 inches. This would, however, be compensated by an edge-to-edge screen so that the overall dimensions remain more or less identical with respect to the previous models.

Presented at the MWC, with a Snapdragon 835

This seems more logical: rumors now show a presentation on the occasion of MWC Barcelona. One learns by the same occasion that phone should embark a Snapdragon 835. There again it is consistent with the habits of Samsung. One will not take too many risks by saying that the European version will be equipped with an Exynos chip equivalent to that of Qualcomm.

6 GB of RAM and 256 of storage

For the 2017 vintage, Samsung would still re-up the amount of RAM from its flagship. The Galaxy S8 would have, like the OnePlus 3, 6 GB RAM against 4 on the S7. Maximum storage would be increased to 256 GB.

without Border and without home button

The serious Bloomberg reports that the screen of the Galaxy S8 would be "borderless", it would occupy almost the entire front. Samsung would take advantage to remove the home button, or at least make it invisible. This is, to say the least, promising.
